Understanding body measurements

Taking accurate body measurements is an important first step in finding the right clothing size and achieving a comfortable, flattering fit. Because body shapes and clothing sizes can vary, using your actual measurements is often more reliable than choosing a size based on a label alone.

For the best results, use a soft, flexible measuring tape and measure over fitted clothing or undergarments. Stand naturally with your body relaxed and keep the measuring tape level and comfortably snug against the body without pulling it too tight.

Key measurements

Bust

Measure around the fullest part of the bust, keeping the tape straight and level across the back.

Waist

Measure around the natural waistline, usually the narrowest part of the torso. Avoid pulling in your stomach while measuring.

Hips

Measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat while standing with your feet together.

Shoulder

Measure across the back from one shoulder point to the other.

Armhole

Measure around the shoulder and underarm area where the sleeve naturally sits.

Sleeve length

Measure from the shoulder point down the arm to the wrist.

Thigh

Measure around the fullest part of the upper thigh.

Rise

Measure from the waistline down to the crotch area. This measurement is particularly useful when choosing trousers and other fitted bottoms.

Inseam

Measure from the crotch along the inside of the leg to the ankle or desired trouser length.

Overall length

Measure from the highest point of the shoulder downward to the desired hemline.

A few helpful tips

For greater accuracy, take each measurement twice and record the measurement immediately. Keep the tape parallel to the floor when taking circumference measurements, and avoid adding extra room unless the sizing instructions specifically ask you to do so.

Remember: your measurements are a guide to achieving the best possible fit. Always compare your measurements with the relevant size chart, as sizing may vary between different garments, styles, and designs.
